Motivations and Organisational Capacities of Potential Orienteering Developers: A Replication Study
Abstract
Background: This replication study, a survey, enhances the understanding of the motivations and organisational capacities of novice orienteers in the Philippines, with a focus on current and future PE teachers.
Methods: Survey. Statistical analysis using rank correlations (Spearman’s rank correlation and Kendall’s tau), Cohen’s d for effect size, and t-tests complemented by simulations of response distributions.
Results: The findings reveal that respondents were motivated to develop orienteering despite its novelty and marginal status in the country. While participants expressed confidence in pursuing the sport, this confidence varied depending on the specific area of organisational capacity. Human resources capacity emerged as the strongest, while financial capacity was identified as the weakest, with no differences in the views between women and men.
Conclusion: Given the limited literature on the diffusion of non-profit sports, further research is recommended to better understand the motivations of novices to engage in orienteering. In particular, Self-Determination Theory could serve as a useful framework for examining the motivations of potential orienteering developers and participants in the Philippines. Additionally, key obstacles to sport development in emerging markets warrant further exploration, along with longitudinal studies tracking the sports’ growth and the individuals involved over time. Such research could provide valuable insights into the patterns of new sport adoption.
Keywords: Organisational capacity, orienteering developers, new sport development
